Each year tens of thousands of people all around the world suffer an injury or illness that involves serious loss of skin e.g. burns. Skin covers the entirety of the body and has multiple roles including: barrier function, regulation of temperature via sweat glands, and synthesis of vitamin D from sunlight. The thick underlying layer of skin (dermis) provides structural support to the outer skin, as well as being a tough protective barrier and shock absorber for what lies beneath.

When skin is damaged it loses its barrier function and the body becomes more susceptible to infection.

Smart Matrix^TM, originally developed by award winning charity RAFT, is aimed at treating full thickness skin injuries, i.e. wounds where the full thickness of skin has been damaged or lost and the wound reaches the layers below.
